Logger Lacrosse loses to Whitworth University, 16-5

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Puget Sound women's lacrosse team suffered a 16-5 loss to the Whitworth University Pirates on Saturday in the Pine Bowl. 

The Loggers struggled to gain control while the Pirates grabbed 20 draw controls and the Loggers only managed four during the entire game. The Loggers had 15 shots, while the Pirates impressed with 39 shots and 25 shots on goal. Phoebe Crowther made eight saves and nine ground balls in the loss. 

The game started with a Pirates possession that led straight to the first goal at the 14:01 mark, the Loggers equalized seven minutes later when Maya Sheklow got open for a pass from Mimi Carrier-Berndt to help score. The Pirates jumped in just minutes later to take the lead again. The Pirates would score two more before Cat Schili could take hold of the draw control and take it all the way to the back of the net with 0:08 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Cat Schilli was the only Logger to net in the second quarter, while the Pirates scored four more to take an 8-3 lead.

In the second half, the Pirates would pick up their scoring efforts and jump out to score two goals in the first 30 seconds after grabbing consecutive draw controls. The Loggers were unable to score in the third quarter, but Bailey Fuhrmann would score two more in the fourth quarter to finish the game 16-5. 

Whitworth was successful with 12-of-15 clears, while the Loggers only managed 13-of-21 clears, each team scored only one free-position shot. 

Sage Fosnock led the Pirates with six saves. Fuhrmann led the Loggers with two goals on four shots, two ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers, while Schilli scored two goals.

The Loggers will head to Walla Walla to face Whitman University, tomorrow, March 23 at 1 p.m.
