Four Loggers score in 18-10 loss to Whitman College

Walla Walla, Wash. – Maya Sheklow and Cat Schilli each scored a hat trick as the Puget Sound Lacrosse team fell 18-10 to Whitman College on Sunday.

In a highly anticipated women's lacrosse match-up, the first quarter saw Maggie Ott leading the scoring charge with the first goal on a free-position attempt at 10:46. Ott's impressive play was swiftly followed by another goal, this time by Sheklow, just a minute later, effectively doubling their lead. With 5:34 remaining on the clock, Bailey Fuhrman's green card opened the door for the Whitman Blues to capitalize, scoring man-up. Cat Schilli displayed her prowess with a powerful goal in the final seconds of the quarter, ending it with a score of 3-1 in favor of Puget Sound.

In the second quarter, Whitman's Madeleine Sherry seized the draw control, setting the tone for her team's offensive onslaught. The Blues not only tied it up, but took the lead at the beginning of the second quarter as the Blues went on a nine goal run following eight draw controls. Freshman Pier Pomeroy halted Whitman's scoring spree with her first goal of the season. Whitman grabbed the next draw control, but Schilli's defensive prowess caused a turnover, leading to a crucial free-position attempt which she successfully converted into a goal. Whitman managed to add one more goal before halftime, leaving the score at 11-5 in favor of the Blues.

The Loggers evened the offensive push with seven shots from each team. Despite Puget Sound's resilient defense causing turnovers, Whitman's Madeleine Sherry and Izzy Eggerling found opportunities to widen the score gap with impressive goals. Puget Sound, however, fought back valiantly, with Maya Sheklow securing crucial goals to keep the game alive.

As the fourth period commenced, Whitman's Gracie Maulik once again demonstrated her prowess in the draw, ensuring her team's continued dominance. Puget Sound's Maggie Ott managed to score a man-down goal, displaying the team's determination amidst adversity. However, Whitman maintained control, with Madeleine Sherry delivering yet another goal to solidify their lead.

Schilli had five caused turnovers, five ground balls, three draw controls and scored three goals on six shots. Sheklow scored four goals and Mimi Carrier-Berndt grabbed four ground balls in the loss.
