TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound Logger lacrosse team fell 14-13 to the Lewis and Clark Pioneers in a non-conference match on Wednesday night in Baker Stadium.
In the opening period, Lewis & Clark took control early with the first draw control, not scoring until three minutes in but securing a 5-1 lead against Puget Sound. Kate Meinhard led the charge for Lewis & Clark with two goals, followed by Sage Swegle, who also found the back of the net. Puget Sound's lone goal came from Cat Schilli, keeping them within reach despite the early deficit.
Puget Sound's resurgence in the second period kept the game competitive as they fought back fiercely, narrowing the gap to 7-5. Led by Maggie Ott and Cat Schilli scoring back-to-back goals, Puget Sound capitalized on opportunities, scoring four goals in the period, but Lewis & Clark managed to maintain their lead. The Loggers attempted three times as many shots as they did in the first period.
The third period saw Puget Sound staging a remarkable comeback, tying the game at 9-9. Despite Lewis & Clark's efforts, Puget Sound's Michaela Chen and Maggie Ott continued to find the net, putting pressure on the opposing defense. Both teams traded goals, setting the stage for an intense final period with the score deadlocked.
In a thrilling finale, Lewis & Clark managed to hold off Puget Sound's relentless attacks, securing a narrow 14-13 victory. Kate Meinhard's late-game heroics proved decisive, with her crucial goals ensuring Lewis & Clark's lead. Despite Puget Sound's valiant efforts, including standout performances from Cat Schilli and Maggie Ott, they fell just short of completing the comeback, as Lewis & Clark emerged victorious in a hard-fought contest. The Loggers were 15-of-15 on clearing opportunities, but struggled 2-of-9 on free-position attempts.
The Loggers will be back in Baker Stadium on April 20-21 to face Whitworth University and Whitman College, face-off at 1 p.m. on both days.
