TACOMA, Wash. – Puget Sound lacrosse comes up short, 20-4, against Whitworth University on Satruday in Baker Stadium.
Whitworth got the scoring spree started early scoring with three quick goals in the first 2:31 of the game. After nine minutes of play, Whitworth amounted to a 5-0 lead. Kenzie Hemman and Campbell Vincent each had two goals when Whitworth led 5-0.
Puget Sound could not be held off the scoreboard for long, Cat Schilli off a great pass from Mimi Carrier-Berndt found the back of the net, for Schilli her 41st of the season and Carrier-Berndt's fifteenth point of the season. Carrier-Berndt would not be done though, after Kenzie Hemman's third goal of the game for Whitworth, Mimi Carrier-Berndt scored from a free position shot to cut the Whitworth lead to 6-2.
After surrendering a Rebecca Irwin goal, Whitworth led 7-2 after fifteen minutes of play. Sierra Witte scored the first of two second quarter goals to give Whitworth an 8-2 lead, but the Loggers would respond. Maggie Ott rifled a shot past Whitworth goaltender Sage Fosnock for Ott's sixteenth of the year.
After Whitworth goals from Kenzie Hemman, Rebecca Irwin, and Sierra Witte, Whitworth led 11-3 at halftime.
The second half saw Whitworth playing at their absolute finest. Caitlin Smith and Abby Hahn each had two goals and Megan Whitman had a goal and an assist for Whitworth, and the visiting Pirates led 16-3 after three quarters of play.
Rebecca Irwin punctuated the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals for an 18-3 lead for Whitworth. Amelie Deese and Kylie Martin scored their first collegiate lacrosse goals in the closing minutes for Whitworth.
Maggie Ott with ten seconds left scored to come away with a multi-goal game for Puget Sound.
Puget Sound goaltender Bianca Nolan made 12 saves on 28 shots faced through three quarters of play before Phoebe Crowther came in relief in the fourth quarter and made one save on five shots.
Puget Sound will host Whitman College tomorrow in their final home match of the season where we will honor six seniors, face-off will be at 1 p.m.
