TACOMA, Wash. — In a gripping match-up between two Tacoma rivals, the Puget Sound Loggers faced off against the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in an intense baseball game that extended into extra innings, the Loggers managed consecutive wins with scores of 7-6 and 4-0 on Friday afternoon.
Game 1: Puget Sound 7, Pacific Lutheran 6
The game began with no score until the Lutes made a solid offensive push, slamming a homer in the bottom of the second from Jaden Pieper, putting them on the scoreboard.
The Loggers fought back in the third inning, with Jack McCullar's RBI single tying the game. They then took the lead in the fourth inning thanks to Charlie Deggeller's RBI double and a wild pitch, putting them ahead 3-1.
The game continued to see-saw as the Lutes rallied in the fourth with a homer from Hayden Kaiser, followed by another homer from the Lutes in the fifth inning, tying the game once again. The Loggers managed to regain the lead in the sixth inning with Davis Franklin's RBI single.
However, the Lutes staged a remarkable comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs to take the lead 6-4. The Loggers refused to back down, tying the game once again in the top of the ninth with clutch hits from Sean Murphy and Cadence Ueyama.
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the 10th inning when the Loggers capitalized on a throwing error to take the lead. Despite a late rally by the Lutes in the bottom of the 10th, the Loggers held on for a hard-fought 7-6 victory.
Game 2: Puget Sound 4, Pacific Lutheran 0
In a thrilling doubleheader, the Puget Sound Loggers dominated against their rivals, the Pacific Lutheran Lutes, in a tight baseball match-up.
The Loggers started off strong, however both teams went scoreless trhough six innings struggling to generate offense early on, with neither side managing to score.
The Loggers made a strong defensive effort in the top of the seventh, Aidan Sullivan led off with a double to centerfield who was later scored in by Davis Franklin's double to center to bring in two. The Loggers scored one more on a wild pitch to lead 3-0. The Lutes threatened to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases with just one out. However, the Loggers managed to hold their ground, preventing the Lutes from scoring.
In the top of the ninth inning, Preston Crockett further solidified the Loggers' lead with a solo home run, bringing the score to 4-0 in favor of Puget Sound.
As the game entered the bottom of the ninth, the Lutes attempted to mount a comeback, with two runners reaching base. However, the Loggers' pitching held firm, securing a shutout victory and sealing their triumph in the second game of the doubleheader.
Joe Schwab pitched 8.0 innings for eight strikeouts and no earned runs.
The Puget Sound baseball team will finish out the series tomorrow on PLU Field at 11 a.m.
