Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Finishes Weekend With Best Team Hitting Percentage, Win

THOUSAND OAKS, California (September 14 2024) - The Loggers went toe to to with the #9 Claremont, up through 15 points in the first set. Then, Puget Sound faced the stronger server they've seen all year from the Athenas, and "lost a bit of their defensive mojo", says Head Coach Mark Massey. "However," he continued, "we executed our serving and blocking tactical plan beautifully, and kept the dominant setter in then nation from having any attacking impact on the game at all. There were a lot of good takeaways from playing one of the best teams in the USA. We found our tactical systems work well … and learned where we need to step up our execution.

The Loggers next faced Chapman, which was a re-match from last weekend with better results. At Whittier, Puget Sound proved victorious in four sets, however this weekend was a pummeling of the Panthers, quickly finishing the game in three sets. Both teams had an opportunity to prepare specifically for the other since the last meeting between the two teams, explained Massey: "We were interested in seeing if we had been able to win that "learning battle." Sweeping them in 3 straight games was a good testament to our hard work on specific skills in practice over the past week."

Against Cal Lutheran, in the third and final match of the weekend, the Loggers were silenced 16-14 in the fifth set in a "dog fight fo a match", says Massey. This was the best hitting performance of the seasons at .248, but the Loggers were limited as they didn't quite execute one of their normal strengths: blocking. "It was good to face a tough, grinding battle like that early in the season" said Massey.

In the last two weeks the Loggers have faced two Top 25 teams and played some "national-caliber" ball against them for significant stretches. Sometimes, Massey continues, "it is easy to forget both how young our squad is and also that we are playing without several injured impactful players right now. This team will continue to just get stronger and stronger in the near future. We wanted to play teams who would push us to the limit in preseason, and we got exactly what we asked for. I also think we gave teams some fierce battles they didn't expect from us, as well.

Massey ended the interview by saying that the Loggers would "like to have a couple of more wins right now from some very close losses, but I love where we are at in our development."
