Logger Football Outplays La Verne in Double OT

LA VERNE, California (September 21, 2024) - Logger Football is leaving California victorious this weekend after besting the La Verne Leopards in double overtime. This is the Loggers' first win against the Leopards since 2019.

The Loggers were able to establish a consistent run game early, proving themselves a threat both in the air and on the ground. Head Coach Jeff Thomas is "proud of the extreme desire by our players. They never gave up and leaned into finding a way."

RB Henry Hernandez was instrumental in the Loggers' ground game, leading the team with 36 carries and a total 190 rushing yards, finishing with two touchdowns and an average of 5.3 yards per carry. Willisione Johnson was the only rusher other than Hernandez and QB Mason Binning to be credited with carries during the game, but he had some important ones, such as the three-yard touchdown in 2OT following Hernandez's 20-yard run to secure the Loggers' final touchdown and force the Leopard's final - and unsuccessful - drive of the game.

Binning had a turnaround performance this evening, coming off of three interceptions last week against Southwestern (TX). Tonight, Binning completed 27/39 for 325 yards, three touchdowns, and no turnovers. Additionally, on special teams, Logger kicker Bryson Boyea-Quiton kept the Loggers in the game during the first overtime period, kicking a field goal to match the Leopards' score and forcing a second bout in OT. Boyea-Quiton was 5/5 in PAT as well.

"It will be a fun week to get us ready for homecoming", says Thomas. The Loggers have a bye week next weekend, taking the first week of conference play to continue to game plan for week two against Pacific at home on October 5th. Kickoff is slated for 1:00pm.
