SALEM, Ore. - The Puget Sound Loggers (5-12, 4-4 NWC) were narrowly beaten by the Willamette Bearcats (6-11,3-5 NWC), 63-61. Both teams battled intensely, but free throws in the final seconds secured the win for the Bearcats.
Puget Sound's stats were led by Mele Sake, who posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, providing an anchor for the Loggers in the paint. Carmen Cruz added 14 points, shooting 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. Addison Reardon chipped in 12 points, including two crucial three-pointers during the Loggers' third-quarter surge.
The game featured three lead changes. Puget Sound started strong, taking a 16-9 lead after the first quarter, but Willamette responded in the second, outscoring the Loggers 21-10. Puget Sound mounted a comeback in the third quarter, regaining the lead at 53-46. However, Willamette's efficient fourth-quarter shooting (53.85%) and steady scoring down the stretch helped them edge ahead.
With 17 seconds remaining, Elyse Waldal hit a jumper to give Willamette a three-point lead, and the Bearcats sealed the game with a free throw from Waldal. The Loggers had a final chance to tie, but their last shot fell short.
Puget Sound next faces Whitworth at home on Friday, January 31st.
