Another Clean Sheet Earns Puget Sound a Point in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Puget Sound keeps their second straight clean sheet in a 0-0 tie with the Whitworth Pirates.

How it Happened
In their first of two legs of their trip to Eastern Washington, the Loggers worked their way to a tie against the Pirates. Puget Sound had a couple of early chances, getting called offside in the 7th minute, and firing off two shots in the 10th and 15th minutes. Kate Short, who picked up her first Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week award last week, fired a shot on net that was saved by the Pirates' keeper.

A slew of corner kicks gave the Loggers a number of chances in the first half, but they couldn't quite convert. The half ended with the Loggers' back line only allowing a single shot, focusing the majority of their attention on finding that elusive first goal.

The second half was a similar story, as Leila Hausia-Haugen fired off shots in the 48th and 54th minutes. After a dangerous foul in the box in the 70th minute, Gianna Maldonado played super hero for the Loggers. Whitworth's Emma Ellerd lined up a penalty kick, hitting the ball to Maldonado's left, but Maldonado came up with a huge save to keep the score at 0-0.

Two more dangerous opportunities left the Loggers hanging in the final five minutes, as Hayden Goodman rifled a shot off the crossbar in the 85th minute. Hausia-Haugen also had a shot on goal in the 87th minute, but a save by the Pirates' keeper keept the sheet clean.

Top Performers
Maldonado records yet another clean sheet, picking up a crucial penalty save to earn the Loggers a point on the road. Short led the team with two shots on goal, and Hausia-Haugen also recorded three shots.

Coach's Thoughts
"We're disappointed with the result, but were still able to create solid opportunities throughout the match," said Logger head coach Stephanie Cox. "Gianna was brilliant in goal, coming up with some big-time saves to maintain the shutout. We're looking for a quick shift and response from our team as we play Whitman tomorrow."

What Happens Next
The Loggers make the trek to Walla, Walla, Wash. to play Whitman tomorrow, October 12th, at 12:00 pm.
