Loggers Win First Game of the Season Over Sagehens

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers open their season against Pomona-Pitzer, taking down the Sagehens 70-58 in a strong opening game.

How it Happened
The Loggers got off to a blazing start, winning the tip-off and getting a quick bucket. Carmen Cruz started her day off strong, as the Loggers took an early 2-0 lead. They continued their solid run, going up 9-2 early. Despite the score being close early, the Sagehens didn't even get a share of the lead the entire game.

Autum Hill got her day going with about 4 minutes left to go in the first, picking up another jumper at the 2:30-minute mark. Cruz and Cayton Smith got on a roll towards the end of the quarter, as a 12-0 run gave the Loggers a 25-10 lead at the break.

Paige Oh started to get going in the second, picking up three points of her own as well as an assist in quick succession. The Sagehens slowly started to come back, though, pulling within eight with three minutes remaining in the second. Another Hill layup and an Oh three-pointer put the Loggers back up 13, as they went into halftime up 41-28.

Cruz startd off hot again, putting up a quick three points to begin the second half. Savannah Pohl also started to heat up, notching three buckets and an assist in a four-minute span. The Loggers, now comfortably up 18, were able to settle into the rest of the game.

Despite the Saghens creeping within eight in the fourth quarter, the Loggers held strong. Their press was efficient, and they showed discipline throughout the end stages of the game. Back-to-back three pointers by Cruz and Hailey Quiggle helped Puget Sound's cause, as they took a smooth 70-58 victory over last year's fourth-place finisher in the SCIAC.

Top Performers
Four Loggers finished with double-digit scoring, as Oh led the way with 14 points. Hill finished with a smooth 8 points and 8 boards, as Cruz had three steals on her way to 13 points.

Coach's Thoughts
"Great gritty team win!" said Logger head coach Casey Kushiyama. "Pomona-Pitzer is very talented and going to be a problem in the SCIAC. I was so proud of our fight and determination to win that game.I loved the toughness and production from our 3-headed monster Savannah, Mele and Autumn. Poh (Paige Oh) and Carmen were incredible tonight too."
