Loggers Fall Just Short Against Colorado College

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- The Loggers drop their first game of the Ken Schumann Invitational to Colorado College, keeping it close until the very end.

How it Happened
The game got off to a slow start, as the Loggers took a couple of minutes to find their first buckett of the evening. Their defense held strong, though, holding the Tigers to only one field goal in the first five minutes of the game. Puget Sound went into the first media timeout tied 5-5, and Paige Oh hit a three at the buzzer to tie the game up at nine apiece after the first quarter.

The start of the second quarter was back-and-forth, as a three-pointer by Grace Lee at the 5:40 minute mark tied the game back up at 15 apiece. Another three by Brianna Forbess, just 30 seconds later, gave the Loggers the lead - their third straight three in the quarter.

Mele Sake and Carmen Cruz got in on the action late in the second, giving the Loggers a six-point lead with under a minute to go in the half. Savannah Pohl then made it 28-20 at the half, sinking a bucket to end the half.

The Tigers started to make a push in the third quarter, though, as they brought it all the way back to 33-31 in the first four minutes of the quarter. The Loggers extended their lead back to six on a layup by Hailey Quiggle, but a 7-0 Tiger run ended the quarter. Puget Sound found themselves down 40-41 after the third, setting up an intense fourth quarter.

Five quick Tiger points started the period, extending the lead to six to set the tone. Back-to-back Carmen Cruz buckets pulled the Loggers within two, but each team held stout defensively. The Loggers found themselves down six yet again with under three minutes to go, but an Autumn Hill layup brought it back to four. The free-throw game started with about a minute to go, and the Tigers took advantage. Despite an Oh three to pull it within one score, two final made free throws handed the Loggers a 54-59 loss.

Top Performers
Carmen Cruz continues to show out this season, leading the team with 15 points. Mele Sake was two points shy of a double-double, picking up 8 points to go with her 10 rebounds.
