CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Loggers win an overtime thriller against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament!
How it Happened
The Loggers played very well to start the game, settling into the match and immediately starting on the front foot.
Leila Hausia-Haugen got the log rolling, putting a shot on frame in the second minute of the game, forcing a corner kick. Despite the play fizzling out, the pressure started to wear down the Athena's back line.Â
Hayden Goodman was next in line, firing a shot that was saved by the Athena's keeper. Hausia-Haugen followed suit six minutes later, riffling a shot that was also saved. A couple of timely substitutions and a change of tactics switched the momentum, though, as CMS started to apply pressure.Â
Gianna Maldonado made two fantastic saves in the 40th minute, as the Athena's kept applying pressure. Claremont had three more shots in the final three minutes of the first half, but Maldonado and the Loggers' back line held steady. The teams went into halftime scoreless, as Puget Sound took a much-needed reset.Â
The second half was a back-and-forth affair. Maldonado made another solid save in the 56th minute, and Hausia-Haugen fired a shot a minute later. The teams kept battling for possession, picking up fouls, and winning good throw-ins, all of which kept Puget Sound in the match. The Athenas had the final scare, as a shot in the 79th minute went off the crossbar. Neither team was able to get it done in regular time, though, as the game turned into a winner-take-all overtime period.Â
In overtime, it was all Claremont.
Gianna Maldonado made a save to force a corner kick, and the Athena's Preslie Lampitt fired another shot that missed up and away. Yet another corner kick, just five minutes into the period applied pressure on the Loggers, but the back line never wavered.Â
All the Loggers needed was one opportunity, and they got it. They won a corner kick on the right side of the goal, and Goodman headed over to take it. As she's done all season, she placed a perfect ball into the box, finding the head of
Kate Short, who found the top right corner of the net to give the Loggers the victory.Â
The Loggers won 1-0, setting up a rematch with No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer.Â
Top Performers
Hausia-Haugen led the team with 4 shots (3 on goal), and a full 98 minutes on the pitch. Maldonado was the star of the show, though, making six crucial saves to hold the Loggers' fourth straight clean sheet.Â
