Loggers Get Revenge With 78-72 Win Over Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Loggers get revenge on the Sagehens, winning their second meeting of the year 78-72.

How it Happened
In a game hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Puget Sound and Pomona-Pitzer went head-to-head for the second time in two weeks. The Loggers played with a fire under them, getting out to an efficient start.

Dezman Baker knocked in the first bucket of the game, and after a missed Sagehen Jumper, Hugo Rutherford made it 4-0 under a minute into the game. The Loggers kept their foot on the gas pedal, as back-to-back Beckett Turner buckets gave the Loggers a 13-8 lead.

The Sagehens bounced back on a 9-0 run, pulling ahead 13-17 for their first lead of the game. Zane Miller and the Loggers pushed forward, though, as Miller knocked down three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc. The rest of the half was all Puget Sound, as Rutherford and Turner knocked down a pair of buckets to make it 37-31 at halftime.

The second half started out strong for the Loggers, as a couple of Layups by Ian Cook put the Loggers back up seven. The team then went on an 8-0 run, as Turner and Rutherford combined for six of those points. Puget Sound held strong through the under-eight media timeout, but the Sagehens started to come back.

As they did throughout a large portion of the game, Rutherford and Turner led the charge once again. Back-to-back Rutherford layups made it 67-57 Loggers, putting them in a great position heading into the final minutes of the game. With about two minutes left in the game, the free-throw game began, as the Loggers closed out a wire-to-wire victory.

Top Performers
Rutherford led the way with 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks, while Turner had 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists. Miller also haf a sollid night, putting up 17 of his own.

Coach's Thoughts
"Back and forth battle with a bunch of big runs by each team tonight, said Logger head coach Aubrey Shelton. "Very proud of our defensive improvements in guarding the three. Beckett and Hugo were amazing offensively, shooting terrific percentages and being aggressive. Great team win, looking forward to a showdown tomorrow!"
