PARKLAND, Wash. - Pacific Lutheran (11-11) defeated the University of Puget Sound (11-11) 83-69 on Tuesday.
Zane Miller opened the scoring for the Loggers with an early 3-pointer, setting the tone for a closely contested first half. Throughout the half, Miller was instrumental, contributing both offensively and defensively, including a key tip-in at the 14:32 mark that kept the score tight.
Taj Phillips facilitated the offense with two assists and added pressure defensively with two steals, while
Hugo Rutherfurd capitalized on opportunities inside, scoring on a layup with 2:02 remaining to level the score at 23-23. Despite these efforts, the Loggers trailed Pacific Lutheran by a narrow margin, concluding the half with a 34-31 deficit.
During the second half, Puget Sound's Miller contributed significantly with a 3-pointer at 16:10 and a series of successful plays later in the half.
Liam Ruttledge added a layup at 11:48, assisted by
Will Pohland, and later contributed with another layup at 2:14. Despite the offensive efforts, including Rutherfurd's two free throws and a layup, the team experienced challenges with turnovers and fouls, allowing Pacific Lutheran to extend their lead. The half concluded with Puget Sound scoring 38 points against PLU's 49, reflecting a competitive but tough segment for the visiting team.
Miller, this week's NWC Student-Athlete of the Week, led the Loggers with 26 points, shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. He also contributed eight total rebounds and two steals. Phillips was a key playmaker with a team-high five assists and added four steals, scoring nine points on 2-of-10 shooting while converting 5-of-6 free throws. Rutherfurd was also efficient, scoring 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting and perfect from the free-throw line, adding four rebounds.
