Baseball Splits Against Pios

PORTLAND, Ore. – Puget Sound's bats fell silent as the Loggers struggled to generate offense in a 10-0 loss to Lewis & Clark today at Jerry Gatto Field.

The Pioneers (10-9, 5-7 NWC) wasted no time getting on the board, pushing across an unearned run in the first inning. They added two more in the third behind back-to-back home runs from Will Heron and Ben Davis. Heron, who finished the day 3-for-5, continued his dominance with a solo shot in the sixth and an RBI groundout in the seventh.

Puget Sound (12-9, 5-4 NWC) put runners on early, but the big hit never came. The Loggers managed just six hits, all singles, and stranded seven runners on base. Ryan Spero led the way with two hits, while Cadence Ueyama and Kahiau Teruya each chipped in one.

Starting pitcher Cal Johnson (3-2) took the loss, allowing five runs—four earned—over 3.1 innings. He struggled with command at times, walking one and hitting a batter while striking out just one. Relievers Mason Seay and Harley Eschliman couldn't slow down the Pioneers either, combining to allow five runs over the final 3.2 innings.

In game two, the Logger offense unraveled a wild sixth-inning avalanche Saturday as Puget Sound plated 17 runs en route to an 18-6 win.

Leading just 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Loggers (13-9) suddenly found themselves trailing 4-1 after Will Heron launched a three-run homer for the Pioneers. The shot was Heron's second of the game.

However, seven Pioneer pitchers combined to allow 18 runs, 11 walks, five hit batters, for a total of 196 pitches in the game. Lucas Brennan led the offensive barrage for Puget Sound, going 3-for-5 with six RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run homer and a bases-clearing double later in the inning. The sixth inning alone saw 17 runs on six hits, 10 walks, four hit batters, and three wild pitches. The Loggers sent 23 batters to the plate. Charlie Deggeller added three hits and reached base four times, scoring twice and driving in two. Jonah Velasco chipped in a 2-for-2 day with a pair of RBIs and a sacrifice fly.

On the mound, five Puget Sound arms divided the work. Reliever Braden Blackwell (1-0) earned the win, despite allowing a three-run homer in the fifth. Starter Preston Crockett tossed two solid innings to open.

The Loggers return home next weekend to host the George Fox Bruins for a three-game series.
