GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Loggers started their season off strong with a 2-0 win over the Southwestern University Pirates on Friday, kicking the dust off their boots and taking home the road victory.
How it Happened
The Loggers made their offensive mark early, racking up three shots within the first four minutes of the game.
Zoe Witter,
Anne Linggi, and
Leila Hausia-Haugen all got a shot off, with two of them being saved by the Pirates keeper. Witter fired another shot on goal in the ninth minute, and the Loggers kept up the pressure on goal.
The Pirates made three early substitutions in the 30th minute, trying to make some changes and stop the Loggers' attack. With three substitutions of their own, the Loggers made an immediate impact. Just three minutes after coming onto the pitch,
Maya George found Hausia-Haugen, who found the back of the net.
The Loggers continued to put pressure on goal for the rest of the half, firing three more shots, but unfortunately didn't find the back of the net. They ended the first half with a stout defensive performance, only allowing two shots, while firing 14 of their own at the Pirates' keeper.
The second half was quite similar for the Loggers, as they kept up the pressure on the Pirates.
Gianna Maldonado made her second save of the game in the 56th minute, adding another in the 67th. Outside of that, the Pirates didn't put any more shots on goal thanks to a great defensive effort by the Loggers.
Kate Short scored her first goal in a Loggers uniform in the 70th minute, giving the team a 2-0 advantage.
Hayden Goodman, a Texas native, secured an assist as well in her home state. The goal gave the Loggers offense some more life as they fired four shots in under two minutes directly following the goal. They weren't able to find the net, though, as they finished with an impressive 2-0 victory over Southwestern.
Top Performers
Hausia-Haugen was a force to be reckoned with, finishing with 7 shots (5 on goal) and a goal in just 81 minutes of work. George got her first assist as a Logger, and Maldonado picked up her first clean sheet of the season with three saves.
Coach's Thoughts
"I am really proud of our team today," said Loggers' head coach
Stephanie Cox. "We got the result today from all of the work that they put in over the summer to be prepared for a tough team in an away environment. We played extremely well as a unit today and were able to adjust throughout the game with everyone owning their role that the team needed to earn the win!"
