TACOMA, Wash. -- The University of Puget Sound fight hard, but come up just short against California Lutheran.
How it Happened
The Loggers got off to a blazing start, marching down the field in under four minutes to open the scoring. Their up-tempo offense and dominant passing attack took the Kingsmen by storm, as
Isaac Tran flipped the ball back to
Hayden Teeter, scoring on a wild trick-play for the Loggers' first touchdown of the day.
Cal Lutheran bounced back immediately, countering the Loggers passing attack with a dominant run game. They tied it up with a one yard rushing touchdown, evening the game at seven. After getting the ball back, the Loggers couldn't convert on fourth down, which set up another Kingsman touchdown to make it 7-14.
To begin the second quarter, Puget Sound had another solid drive. After backing up to their own 15-yard line, they got into Kingsmen territory. An incomplete pass on fourth down turned the ball over, though, as they gave the ball back to CLU. Three plays later, the Kingsman made it 21-7, as the Loggers found themselves two scores down.
The ensuing drive was fantastic, though, as the Loggers found their grove. Following a timeout on a 3rd and 10 at Cal Lutherans 38,
Darius Bailey worked his magic. He worked a slant route across the center of the field, catching the ball at the 35 and taking it to the house. A
Charlie Reisman PAT pulled the Loggers within seven, putting them within reach yet again.
Cal Lutheran responded yet again, only taking three minutes to march down the field. Despite being down 28-14, the Loggers put together another solid drive. An 18-yard pass to
Joe Gallagher opened up the field, and Teeter took the first-down opportunity to test the Kingsmen deep. A 40-yard rocket to Bailey found the end zone, as Bailey pulled the ball down in double coverage.
A final touchdown by the Kingsman made it 35-21 at halftime, as the Loggers found themselves down 14. After an eventful second quarter, the Kingsmen rushed the ball nine times on a 10 play drive, punching it in to make the score 42-21. After the Loggers couldn't convert on fourth down, Cal Lutheran marched down the field again, making it 48-21.
Berlie Fincham secured one of the biggest highlights of the day, blocking the PAT and denying the Kingsmen the extra point.
The Logger's last touchdown of the day came on a drive to start the fourth quarter. A 30-yard pass to Gallagher put Puget Sound in Kingsmen territory, and a pass to
Isaac Tran wrapped up the scoring for the day.
A failed onside kick and a touchdown by California Lutheran sealed the deal, as the Loggers dropped this one, 55-28.
Top Performers

Gallagher picked up 11 receptions and 125 yards, while Tran finished with a passing and receiving touchdown.

Coach's Thoughts
"We got beat today, there's no sugarcoating that," said Logger head coach
Jeff Thomas. "Credit to Cal Lutheran, they executed and played with great consistency. For us, this is about staying committed to the process of getting better each week. We have a vision for what Logger Football is supposed to be, and days like this test our resolve. But our identity is built on mental toughness and extreme desire. We'll take this, learn from it, and keep building toward the team we know we can become. We will take the next two weeks to get healthy and be ready for conference play."
