Loggers Shutout Pioneers 2-0 to Start NWC Play

TACOMA, Wash. – Alex Haugaard scored early in the first half, and Vinny Self added one early in the second half as the Puget Sound Loggers kicked off their Northwest Conference season on Saturday with a 2-0 shutout of Lewis & Clark College at East Field..

How it Happened

Haugaard gave UPS (2-1-1, 1-0-0 NWC) a 1-0 lead just 8:18 into the game when he sent a shot from just inside the penalty area into the back left corner.

Self made it 2-0 just 8½ minute after halftime. Playing on the right side near the top of the box, he let loose with a hard shot that beat Pioneers goalkeeper Michaiah Garan.

It was the first goal of the year for both Loggers.

The teams played with 10 men for the final 58 minutes, 23 seconds after a player from each side was sent off with a straight red card with 13:47 left in the first half.

Puget Sound was picked No. 5 in the NWC preseason poll. Lewis & Clark was picked No. 9.

Top Performers
As has been the case throughout the season, Luke Mamiya and Parker Norris split time in goal. Mamiya got the start and made one save. Norris subbed in to start the second half and was not called upon to make save as Lewis & Clark (0-4-1, 0-1-0 NWC) had just two shots. This is their second combined shutout.

Coach's Thoughts
"Today was a hard-fought battle, and our team showed great determination until the very end, said Logger head coach Steve Mohn. "We defended well as a unit, and it's always great to begin conference play with a win and a shutout. We'll look to maintain that same mindset throughout the season."

What Happens Next
The Loggers are right back in action on Sunday at East Field, taking on George Fox. Kickoff is at 2:45 p.m.. As was the case on Saturday, that will be the second half of a doubleheader, as the women take on George Fox at noon.
