Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Mark Moschetti

Loggers Beat Lewis & Clark 2-0 to Open NWC Play

TACOMA, Wash. – Zoe Witter and Leila Hausia-Haugen each scored their second goals of the season, and the Puget Sound Loggers opened their Northwest Conference women's soccer schedule with a 2-0 victory against Lewis & Clark College at East Field.

How it Happened
Witter put the Loggers (2-2-1, 1-0-0 NWC) on the board at the 29:59 mark. Playing in the right side of the penalty area, she drilled one past Pioneers goalkeeper Anna Ingidotter into the far side of the net.

Hausia-Haugen doubled the lead at 38:28. She was at the top of the arc and launched a shot that ducked just under the top of the net and fell in behind the keeper.

The Loggers nearly made it 3-0 near the midpoint of the second half. Mia Fitzsimmons was on target with her shot from the top of the box, but the ball clanged off the middle of the crossbar.

Puget Sound got back into the win column to start conference play after dropping its final two non-conference games. The Loggers were picked No. 2 in the NWC preseason poll.

Top Performers
Goalkeeper Gia Maldonado, a junior, was called upon to make just one save in earning her second shutout of the year. In fact that save, coming with 11:27 left in the first half, was the only shot of the day for the Pioneers (0-4-1, 0-1-0 NWC). Maldonado has played every minute of the season so far and already has one NWC Defensive Player of the Week award. … Hausia-Haugen's goal was one of her team-leading six shots for the day. …

Coach's Thoughts
"I am extremely proud of our team and how focused and disciplined they stayed to the things we are trying to accomplish during the game against Lewis and Clark. We had some great goals from Witter and Leila that were created from moments that we have been working on as a group.  We are excited to continue our momentum against George Fox tomorrow."

What Happens Next
The Loggers are right back in action on Sunday at East Field, taking on George Fox. Kickoff is at noon. As was the case on Saturday, that will be the opener of a doubleheader, as the men take on George Fox at 2:45 p.m.
