TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers continue their hot streak, sweeping Pacific Lutheran for the second time this season.
How it Happened
The Loggers wasted no time, jumping out to a quick 8-3 lead thanks to a couple of kills by
Mackenzie Leith. They never relinquished the lead, going on another 5-2 run to make it 13-7, this time with kills by
Makela Pick and
Erin Fagan. After going up 18-10, the Lutes went on a 9-3 run of their own. PLU crawled back within one – 24-23, but a final service error by Lutes gave the Loggers a 25-23 first set victory.
The second set also started well, as the Loggers started with a 6-1 run.
Amelia Reed chipped in with an ace, and a couple of kils by Fagan and Pick helped maintain a five-point lead – 14-9. A couple of kills by
Maddie Badger,
Makela Pick, and
Mia Fedota helped push the Loggers over the edge, going on a 5-1 run to put the second set away. Their 25-17 set win gave them some momentum, as the Lutes didn't have an answer for the Loggers' attack.
Set three mirrored set two, as Puget Sound began the set on yet another 6-1 run. An
Akira Anderson ace pushed the lead to six, but the Lutes came back with a 4-0 run of their own. The Loggers struggled to gain momentum, as the Lutes took their first lead of the set, going up 13-12. A 7-2 Logger run ensued, as they took back a commanding four-point lead late in the set. Kills by Leith, Pick, and Badger pushed the lead to 24-18, but the Lutes weren't finished. A 4-0 run forced a Logger timeout, but Fagan put an end to it with a match-winning kill.
After not sweeping the Lutes since 2016, Puget Sound has now swept them twice in one season. Their stellar play continues, as they are now 3-0 in conference play, and are riding a four-game win streak.
Top Performers
Pick lead the way with 11 kills, hitting a whopping .625 in an efficient night on the right side.
Randi Rush continued to show why she is ranked No. 7 in assists/set in the nation, posting 38 against the Lutes. Badger also had double-digit kills with 10, as she sits as the No. 4 most efficient hitter in all of DIII.
Coach's Thoughts
"Another classic matchup between two great rivals," said Logger head coach
Mark Massey. "Both sides threw some punches tonight, and PLU played their typical great defense. I thought we did a good job of executing our game plan and winning some critical offensive battles.
Makela Pick had her best night of the season for us, leading the team with 11 kills and hitting a monstrous .625 efficiency.
Maddie Badger (10 kills) and Mack Leith (9 kills) were right behind her. Defensive Specialist
Amelia Reed handled some heavy duties well in reception, and
Akira Anderson was dominant defensively against their outside attack."
