Loggers Stage Comeback to Edge Pirates 2-1

TACOMA, Wash. - - Baker Stadium hosted a thrilling comeback win on Saturday afternoon as the Puget Sound men's soccer team erased an early deficit to take down the Whitworth Pirates 2-1.

How it Happened

The visiting Pirates came out firing with several shots before breaking through just nine minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead.

Looking to respond, the Loggers settled into the rhythm of the game, generating dangerous offensive opportunities and taking a pair of back-to-back corner kicks. While both sides traded shots throughout the remainder of a gritty first half, the scoreboard remained in favor of Whitworth headed into the break.

Adjustments were made at halftime and an entirely different Logger attack came out for the final 45 minutes. The breakthrough came 10 minutes into the second half when Jackson Smith leveled the score, finding the back of the net off an assist from Jarren Merced to make it 1–1.

Just under three minutes later, the Loggers struck again to take the game into their own hands. Joel Wollin bounced on a loose ball in the box, sliding it home to take a 2–1 lead for Puget Sound.

The remainder of the match was an intense battle with chances at both ends. Both teams traded shots and earned consecutive corner kicks, giving the Pirates some dangerous late opportunities.

However, the Logger defense stood tall as Puget Sound sealed the hard fought, dramatic win.

What Happens Next

The Loggers return to Baker Stadium tomorrow at 12 p.m. for another competitive Northwest Conference match up against Whitman.
