Volleyball Falls to Pirates 3-1 In a Solid Defensive Battle

TACOMA, Wash. -- In a great four-set battle, the Loggers drop their match to Whitworth, 3-1.

How it Happened
Most of the sets were back and forth, as the teams were evenly matched throughout the majority of the game. Nicolette Raduziner got off to a great start, smashing a kill for the Logger's first point of the game. The Loggers held steady, as the teams kept trading points. Viviann Garcia had a great block, and kills by Raduziner, and Maddie Badger helped the Loggers take a 9-8 lead.

Charlotte Fleetwood got started with a pair of kills herself, and Lauren Ly aced to start a 4-0 Logger run. All of a sudden, the Loggers were up 17-13, running on cruise control against the Pirates. Whitworth pulled it back to tie the match at 20 apiece, but a strong Logger run led by three Aubrey Tanner kills put the set away, 25-23.

The Pirates controlled the majority of the second set, as the Loggers struggled to find their groove. After going down 5-1 early, Puget Sound came back strong to bring it within one, as Fleetwood and Tanner picked up kills along the way. Another Garcia block tied the game at six, but the Pirates started to pull away. An 11-2 run put the Loggers down 19-10, as Tanner's two final kills were the bright spot in their 16-25 set two loss.

The third set started out better, as the Loggers got out to a 4-3 lead. Camryn Shigemasa added another ace, as the Loggers forced three Pirate errors. Mia Fedota got in on the action with a kill as well, but the Pirates jumped out to a 10-5 lead. Down 12-6, the Loggers went on a 9-0 run to go ahead by three. Badger riffled off four kills in a row, with Raduziner adding the cherry on top. Another kill by Tanner and a Calista Davis ace made it 17-15, but a 10-0 Pirate run capped off the set.

The Loggers got out to a great start in the fourth set, as kills by Tanner, Badger and Raduziner gave the Logs a 6-1 early lead. The Pirates worked their way back into the set, but another kill by Tanner made it 9-7. The teams traded points back and forth, but a 7-0 Pirate run put the Loggers with their backs against the wall. A Raduziner kill stopped the bleeding, as the Pirates went on another 4-1 run to make it 14-20. The Loggers weren't able to gain any momentum, despite late kills by Fleetwood and Ursula Harrington, dropping set four, 25-17.

In a game that saw several long rallies, and some great defense, Tanner finished with 11 kills, 13 assists, and 8 digs to wrap up her weekend. Samantha Keightley also played well defensively, adding 23 digs.
