A Rainy Friday Gives Loggers First Win of Season Over Redlands 11-5

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers start their season in the win column, taking down the Redlands Bulldogs 11-5 in six innings.

How it Happened
On a rainy afternoon, Puget Sound came to play. Charlie Decker got the day started on the mound for the Loggers, pitching a shutout first inning to set the tone. Despite a Kellen Krebs single, the Loggers also left a runner on base in the first. The Bulldogs got on the board in the second, scoring an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead.

The Loggers struck back in the bottom of the second, as Kahiau Teruya led off with a single to centerfield. After Teruya advanced to second on a passed ball, the Loggers found themselves with a runner on second with two outs. Isaac Fendel singled to center to send him home, and another single by Charlie Deggeller placed Fendel on third. Preston Crockett earned a walk to load the bases, and Matt Churchill took advantage. A bases-clearing double sent three Loggers home, giving Puget Sound a 4-1 lead.

Krebs nearly sent one out of the park during the next at-bat, hitting off the centerfield wall and sending Churchill home. The Loggers took a comfortable 5-1 lead into the third inning, but the Bulldogs struck back. Redlands made it a 5-3 ball game, but the Loggers loaded the bases again in the third. A Deggeller sac fly added an insurance run, making it 6-3 after the third.

The fourth provided no runs for either team, as Decker got through a clean 1-2-3 inning. The rain started to come down, chasing Decker out in the fifth, as two Bulldog runs came across the plate. Braden Blackwell came into the game, striking out three straight batters to end the third inning.

The bottom of the fifth put the game away for the Loggers, piling on another five runs. Brock Makishima drew a walk after double-digit pitches, and Deggeller singled to center to put him on second. Crockett and Churchill also secured back-to-back walks, scoring Makishima from third. A Krebs single brought in two more, and another Teruya single brought the final two runs across the plate.

The Buldogs were held scoreless in the top of the sixth, and then the game was called after the rain kept coming down. The Loggers take this one, 11-5 through six innings.
