LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Loggers drop both games of their doubleheader against Occidental, splitting the series as they look ahead towards California Lutheran,
How it Happened
Game 1
Puget Sound got the log rolling early, as
Charlie Deggeller got on base thanks to a fielding error by the second baseman.
Matt Churchill got on base as well, and after a
Kellen Krebs single, the bases were loaded with no outs.
Ryan Spero hit a sacrifice fly to score Deggeller, and
Cooper Allen hit another sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Loggers.
The Tigers bounced back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, and after a scoreless two innings, Oxy took the lead in the bottom of the third.
Armand Lettiere added a single in the top of the fourth, but the Loggers couldn't cash in on the base runner. Occidental made it 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but a
Ryan Spero lead-off home run in the top of the sixth pulled the Loggers back in the game.
A
Preston Crockett single, and Lettiere and
Ryan Tobler walks loaded the bases with one out, but an infield fly and ground out ended the inning. The Tigers then loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but a massive final strikeout kept the game at 5-3. A Churchill walk and Krebs double put runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh, and this time the Loggers took advantage. They pulled within one run thanks to an RBI groundout by Spero, just needing one run in the final two innings.
Occidental added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning, though, which proved to be enough to keep the Loggers at bay. The Tigers take game two of the series 6-4.
Game 2
The Logggers got out to a blazing start in game two, scoring six runs in the top of the first innings. After two quick outs, Krebs doubled to center, Spero walked, and Allen doubled down the line to score the two. Lettiere then walked, and a
Brock Makishima single scored Allen to make it 3-0. A balk brought Lettiere ome, and a
Lucas Brennan home run capped off the Loggers' impressive run.
The Tigers pulled right back into the game with a grand slam in the bottom of the first, as both teams started to pour in the runs. The Loggers scored three more in the top of the third, as another Brennan home run made it 8-4. After an
Isaac Fendel walk,
Matt Churchill singled to right-center field to extend the Logger lead to five.
Occidental pulled a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but the Loggers immediately responded in the fifth. They loaded the bases to start the inning, with Spero recording another sac fly to bring home a run. Allen brought home another base runner via a sac fly to make it 11-5, capping off another productive scoring inning. The Tigers made it 11-6 after five, and 11-9 after a big sixth inning.
The Loggers went on a large run in the top of the seventh, tallying three hits, one walk, and one hit by pitch. They ended up scoring four runs in the inning, taking a six-run lead into the bottom of the seventh. Oxy did the near-impossible, though, as they scored the seven runs necessary to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. The Loggers lose the final game of the series in heartbreaking fashion, and look to finish their California road trip 2-2 tomorrow.
