TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers earn a split with George Fox, getting a much-needed victory over the fourth-placed Bruins.
How it Happened
Game 1
Nyomi Estrada got the start in the circle for the Loggers in game one, pitching her eighth complete game of the season. After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, Estrada held on and pitched four straight scoreless innings. She finished the game with a win, picking up four strikeouts along the way.
The Loggers got on the bases early, as a
Claire Besancon walk led off the bottom of the first. Estrada got it done on the offensive end, moving Besancon over to third to put runners on the corners.
Rylie Madariaga pinch ran and stole second, but two outs ended the inning, and the Loggers left two stranded.
After a scoreless second and top of the third, Estrada got on board again with a single through the left side. Thai set ip
Elyssa Garcia, who swung on the first pitch and hit it to deep centerfield to give the Loggers a 2-1 lead. This was the first home run hit at the new and improved Logger Softball Field, giving the Loggers an early lead.
The two first-years in the lineup kept the log rolling in the fourth, as
Macy Maxwell and
Peyton Willing got on board with singles to lead off the inning. A
Brenna Flannery sacrifice bunt moved the runners, and a
Jazzy Allen sacrifice fly sent Maxwell home. Besancon singled to bring
Kirstyn Scott, who pinch ran for Willing, home, making it 4-1 Loggers.
Despite a solo home run by the Bruins in the top of the sixth, the Loggers were able to hold onto their lead. Estrada took care of business to finish the seventh inning, as Puget Sound took the first game of the series.
Game 2
The Loggers continued to play well to start game two. After
Alison Madia blanked the Bruins in the top of the first, Besancon only needed two pitches to put the Loggers on the board. She hit a deep shot to left field, touching all the bases to put Puget Sound up one. Madia put up two more scoreless innings, making quick work of the Bruins' lineup.
The Loggers put another run on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring on an Error by the Bruins' second baseman. Besancon got on the basepads thanks to her second hit of the day, and after
Alyssa Waldo walked, Garcia hit a sharply hit ball at the second baseman, forcing an error. This allowed Waldo to make it around to score, as the Loggers took a 2-0 lead after three innings.
The Bruins' bats woke up in the fourth inning, though, putting up six runs. They put up another six runs in the top of the fifth, ending the game after five innings of work. The Loggers still held onto a split, putting themselves in a great position to take the series tomorrow.
