TACOMA, Wash. -- The Loggers celebrate senior day in their final home weekend of the year, dropping two very close games to cap off their weekend.
How it Happened
Game 1
After throwing 189 pitches in game 1 yesterday,
Nyomi Estrada got the start in the circle on day two. She started out strong, striking out two and getting out of the first and second innings scot free.
Macy Maxwell got the Log rolling in the second, singling through the right side to become the Loggers' first baserunner. Whitworth got the first run of the day, hitting a two-out double to make it a 1-0 ball game after three, as the Loggers weren't able to take advantage of some two-out traffic.
Claire Besancon hit a single to center, and
Alyssa Waldo drew a walk to put runners on first and second. A flyout by Estrada ended the inning, keeping it 1-0.
The Pirates added another unearned run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Loggers responded for their first run of the day.
Brenna Flannery singled to right, and with two outs, Waldo doubled to deep right field to send Flannery home. The teams kept going back and forth, as the Pirates added a run in the top of the sixth, putting the Loggers down two yet again.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Loggers' bats came alive.
Alyssa Figueroa singled to lead off the inning, with Maxwell doubling to center field to put runners on second and third. After a popup,
Olivia Boures stepped up to the plate with one out. She hit a deep shot to center field to clear the bases, the perfect time for her first home run of the season. Flannery got another single in the sixth following the home run, but after two final outs, the Loggers took a 4-3 lead into the seventh.
The Pirates hit a two-run home run of their own in the top of the seventh, adding three more to extend their lead to 8-4. That's where the game ended, as the Pirates took game three of the series.
Game 2
Lauren Perryman got the start in the circle for the Loggers, getting off to a perfect start. She got through the first three innings with a no-hitter, only needing 28 pitches to retire the lineup. She kept it going through the fourth, only allowing 1 hit through the opening four.
The Loggers got off to a great start in game two, as Besancon doubled down the left field line to put a runner on second with no outs. Two groundouts moved Besancon around the horn, sliding into home to give the Loggers a 1-0 lead.
The Loggers continued to tack on runs in the bottom of the second, jumping out to a 4-0 lead early. Flannery led off the inning thanks to a Pirate error, and Boures singled to right center to move her over.
Elyssa Garcia then reached first thanks to another Pirate error, sending Flannery home. With two outs, Besancon singled to second, bringing home two more to make it 4-0 Loggers.
Maxwell and Figueroa both logged hits to keep the train moving, but after a Pirate pitching change, the Loggers were held scoreless in the third. The Pirates were the next to score, tying the ball game with 4 runs in the fourth.
Perryman escaped a jam in the top of the sixth, keeping the score tied at four apiece. In the seventh, the Pirates tacked on a run, giving the Loggers some work to do in the bottom of the inning. Puget Sound put runners aboard as both Maxwell and Figueroa singled to get on the basepads. A passed ball moved the runners to third, and a Flannery walk loaded the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Garcia drew a walk to bring Maxwell home, tying the game at 5 apiece.
Kara Miyoshi pitched well in the top of the third inning, making quick work with three straight groundouts. The Pirates struck first in extras, scoring an unearned run in the top of the ninth. Maxwell got on board yet again with a lead-off walk in the ninth, with Figueroa moving Maxwell to second thanks to a Pirate error. A groundout moved the runners, but the Loggers came up just short. The Pirates took game four, 6-5.
