TACOMA, Wash. - A trio of first half goals was all it took for
the fourth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers to shutout the Pacific
Boxers, 3-0, in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on
Sunday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
Junior Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) scored her NWC-leading
10th goal of the season in the 23rd minute, dribbling past a
defender and firing in a shot from about 10 yards out, to give UPS
the early 1-0 lead. Levien made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute
when senior Fiona Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) passed the ball
into the middle of the box from the right post and Levien finished
the play from about eight yards out.
Freshman Mikaela Freeman (Alameda, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) scored
the game's third goal and her fourth of the weekend right before
halftime when Levien fed her from the middle of the field in the
44th minutes and Freeman shot from 12 yards out to make it
3-0.
In the second half, the Loggers continued to pressure the Boxers
offensively, as UPS added 11 of their 24 shots in the second
period, forcing Erin Ichimura to make six of her 12 saves in the
final 45 minutes. Pacific's Shelly Martindale was shown the
game's only card, receiving a yellow in the 55th minute of an
otherwise clean contest.
The Loggers take to the road next weekend, traveling to Oregon
for matches against Lewis & Clark and Willamette.
