TACOMA, Wash. - It took just 17 seconds for the Puget Sound
Loggers to score their first goal of 2008 and 89:43 later, it would
be the only score the fifth-ranked Loggers would need to pick up
their first win of the season, defeating the Chapman Panthers, 1-0,
in a NCAA Division III non-conference women's soccer match on
Saturday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma,
Wash.
Following a Chapman foul in the box, senior midfielder Fiona
Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) lined up a penalty kick just 17
seconds into the game and converted to the left side of the net as
the Loggers took the early 1-0 lead. The Loggers continued to
pour on the offense, registering 14 shots in the first half,
including six on net. The Puget Sound defense also chipped
in, preventing Chapman from registering a shot in the first half.
In the second half, it was much as the same as Katie Wheeler
(Oregon City, Ore.) came into goal in relief of Kallie Wolfer (Salt
Lake City, Utah/Skyline) and Wheeler registered the Loggers only
save on the game on the Panthers only shot of the game.
Despite a continued offensive pressure, the Loggers weren't able to
score a second goal but in the end, they didn't need to as they
earned the season-opening win.
Junior All-American Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) led the team
with seven shots. Freshman Jenny Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood)
got off five shots while Gornick chalked up four shots, including
the game-winning goal.
For Chapman, reserve Alicia Fraticelli had the Panthers' lone
shot of the afternoon while senior keeper Madison Coffin collected
15 saves in holding off the Loggers' offensive barrage. Mia
Pierro was shown a yellow card in the 15th minute following a hard
foul.
The Loggers will be action again next Saturday when they travel
down to Salem, Ore. to take on the Corban Warriors. Puget
Sound will return home the next day, hosting Concordia (Ore.) in
the first game of a non-conference doubleheader. The Logger
men will play in the second game, taking on St. Mary's (Minn.).
