TACOMA, Wash. - A pair of goals by junior Janece Levien
(Beaverton, Ore.) was enough to propel the 13th-ranked Puget Sound
Loggers past the cross-town rival Pacific Lutheran Lutes, 2-1,
in the Northwest Conference women's soccer opener for both teams on
Wednesday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma,
Wash.
The Loggers (3-1, 1-0 NWC) got on the scoreboard first in the
31st minute when freshman Jenny Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood)
chipped the ball over PLU keeper Kamryn Morgan, who had come up to
the 18-yard line, and a streaking Levien took the ball to
finish on the left side of the empty net. In the 33rd minute,
it was Levien again, this time on a feed from Kayla Boortz
(Greenwood Village, Colo./Regis Jesuit) from about 30 yards out.
The Lutes got on the board in the 70th minute of play when
freshman Laura Bressler powered a free-kick from about 25-yards out
into the upper-right corner and just past the outstretched hand of
the Loggers' Katie Wheeler (Oregon City, Ore.). In the
closing minutes of the game, it looked like Levien might collect
the hat trick but Morgan came charging out and following a
rough tackle at the top of the box, Morgan was shown a red card by
the head referee.
The win was the Loggers' 20th straight victory over PLU and
Puget Sound did it by out-shooting the Lutes, 16-11, and by
collecting seven corners while leaving PLU with none.
The Loggers hit the road this weekend, traveling to Newberg,
Ore. on Sunday to take on George Fox. Game time with the
Bruins is set for Noon at Morse Athletic Fields on the GFU campus.
