SPOKANE, Wash. - Billed as one of the top matches in the country
this weekend, the fifth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers made quick work
of the ninth-ranked Whitworth Pirates, 3-1, in a Northwest
Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Whitworth
Soccer Field in Spokane, Wash.
The Loggers (5-1, 3-0 NWC) had to wait less than seven minutes
to get on the scoreboard after freshman Rochel Burke (Selah, Wash.)
fed the ball to 2007 NWC Offensive Player of the Year Janece Levien
(Beaverton, Ore.), who booted the ball past Whitworth's Callie
Bergstrom for the game's first goal. The Loggers scored a
second goal late in the first half with Mikaela Freeman (Alameda,
Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) took a corner from Fiona Gornick (Portland,
Ore./Grant) in the 44th minute to give UPS a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Loggers pushed the lead to three goals
when freshman Jenny Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) took a pass
from Abby Goss (Spokane, Wash./University) following a Gornick
corner and Moore put the ball in the net for her second goal of the
season. Whitworth finally scored in the 85th minute when
Mahyo Seyedali fired a shot at Logger keeper Kallie
Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) and Cory Druffel took a shot
on the rebound for a Pirate goal.
Wolfer was forced into making just two saves on the day as the
Loggers outshot the Bucs 11-8. Whitworth was called for 11
fouls, compared with seven for UPS while Whitworth's Penelope Crowe
was shown the only card of the game, receiving a yellow card in the
ninth minute.
The Loggers will head down to Walla Walla tonight for a Sunday
match with Whitman, beginning at Noon.
