SPOKANE, Wash. - For 25 straight Northwest Conference games, the
second-ranked Puget Sound Loggers reigned victorious but all good
things must come to an end as the Whitworth Pirates scored the game
winning in the 107th minute to collect a 1-0 win in a NWC women's
soccer game on Sunday in Spokane, Wash.
In regulation, the NWC-leading Loggers kept the Whitworth
defense busy, peppering eight first half shots that forced Callie
Bergstrom to make five first half saves. In the second half,
the Pirates went on the offensive, unleashing five shots but Kallie
Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) get the ball out of the net,
collecting two saves.
In the first overtime period, neither team was able to get a
shot off but in the second overtime period, the defenses began to
tire and the two offenses took advantage. The Loggers managed
shots by Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) and Alyssa Renosto (Davis,
Calif.) but Bergstrom made the saves. After battling for
nearly 107 minutes, the Pirates got the game winner when Elizabeth
Mattila crossed the ball in from the right side and the pass found
the head of Stacy Hamer, who knocked it in for the goal.
The Loggers outshot the Bucs, 13-11, on the game, including nine
shots on goal. Puget Sound also held a 6-0 advantage on
corner kicks.
The Loggers return home on Saturday to take on Lewis &
Clark, beginning at Noon in Tacoma.
