TACOMA, Wash. - A pair of goals from sophomore Theresa Henle
(Issaquah, Was.) was all the fourth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers
needed as they moved into sole-possession of first place in the
Northwest Conference with a 2-1 win over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes
in a NWC women's soccer match on Wednesday in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers, ranked fourth in the latest D3soccer.com Top 25,
got on the board in the 18th minute when Mikaela Freeman (Alameda,
Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) unleashed a long cross from along the right
sideline and Henle was waiting along the far post to head the ball
into the net for her third goal of the season and the 50th goal of
the year for the Loggers as a team.
Puget Sound scored again in the 66th minute when Janece Levien
(Beaverton, Ore.) couldn't find an opening to shoot so instead
passed the ball out of the box and Henle put a strong boot on it
from about 17 yards out and into the net for the 2-0 Logger
lead.
The Lutes made it interesting in the 70th minute when Olivia Lee
gained control of a long corner kick and passed the ball to
Kristina Snaring, who then found a waiting Courtney Walker, who
fired in a shot from outside the box that slipped just over the
fingers of Logger keeper Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City,
Utah/Skyline). The Logger defense controlled the game the
rest of the way, holding PLU without another shot, to collect the
2-1 victory.
The Loggers outshot the Lutes, 21-2, on the game but both of the
Lute shots were on goal, forcing Wolfer to make one first-half
save. In the other net, Lauren Chambard made six saves for
PLU, allowing the two Logger goals. Puget Sound also held a
10-2 advantage on corner kicks while PLU was whistled for the lone
offside of the match. The victory marked the 23rd straight
win over PLU for the Loggers, who moved three points ahead of
second-place Whitworth in the conference standings.
Puget Sound will next take to the field on Saturday morning when
they travel to take on George Fox in a match set to begin at 11:00
a.m. in Newberg, Ore.
