TACOMA, Wash. - Finishing with 12 blocks, including six from
senior Kalli Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.) and five from sophomore Bre
Boyce (Kent, Wash./Kentwood), the 22nd-ranked Puget Sound Loggers
made quick work of the visiting Linfield Wildcats, 25-15, 25-17,
25-16, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday evening
at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first set, the Loggers (11-4, 5-2 NWC) got off to a quick
start, building a 7-1 lead to force Linfield to call a
timeout. Puget Sound continued to stay up on the 'Cats, never
letting Linfield within four points, as the Loggers collected the
25-15 victory. Boyce got off to a hot start on her own,
posting four kills in the first set alone.
In the second set, it was Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) who
stepped up, putting down four kills while Kamphaus was a force on
the net, sending down four of her six blocks at the Loggers
collected a 25-17 victory to take the two-set lead. Puget
Sound had just seven kills in the second frame but Linfield
committed 12 attack errors to give the Loggers the set victory.
In the third and final set, the Loggers jumped out to an 8-2
lead but the Wildcats fought back to get within three. Puget
Sound put the pedal to the metal again, using an 8-3 run to put the
set out of reach as they picked up the three-set victory. The
Loggers put down a match-high 13 kills in the third set, hitting
.273 to collect the win.
Puget Sound was led by 11 kills from Blickenstaff, who also
added four blocks. Stephanie Harvey (Yakima,
Wash./Eisenhower) collected 23 assists in the win while Kamphaus
led all players with her six blocks. Junior Kris Sumida
(Kaneohe, Hawaii/Iolani) did her part as well from the service
line, collecting three of the Loggers' nine aces.
Linfield was led by six kills from Rosa Gimson. Samantha
Lau, finished with 12 digs on the night, slightly below her
NWC-leading average of 4.69 digs per set. The 'Cats hit just
.031 on the night, putting down 29 kills but committing 26 attack
errors on 97 total attacks.
Puget Sound returns to the court on Saturday evening when they
play host to George Fox. Match time with the Bruins is set
for 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
