TACOMA, Wash. - A day after putting up 35 runs in a pair of
Northwest Conference victories, the Puget Sound Loggers got a taste
of their own medicine on Sunday afternoon as the Whitworth Pirates
used a nine-run second inning to take a 12-7 win in a NWC baseball
game at Logger Field in Tacoma. The teams were supposed to play two
games but the second game was washed away due to rain.
Whitworth took the lead in the second inning, taking advantage
of three Logger errors to score nine runs, all of them unearned, to
take the early lead. The highlight of the inning came on a triple
by outfielder Mitch Ramsay that scored a trio of Pirate runs as
Whitworth gave the Loggers a taste of what Saturday was like for
them.
The Loggers bats got to work in the bottom of the second as
Puget Sound led off the inning with three straight triples. David
Thirlby (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea) doubled to right center to score
Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) and then Doug Cox (Kailua,
Hawaii/Kalaheo) doubled in Thirlby to put two Logger runs on the
board. Cox and Travis Hernandez (Burlington,
Wash./Burlington-Edison) scored runs three and four respectively on
a double by Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) as the Loggers
cut the gap to 9-4.
Puget Sound got within two runs in the fourth inning as Gregg
Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School) singled in Will
Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep). Resnik then singled in
Hernandez and Ringold came around and scored on a Whitworth
throwing error following a failed pickoff attempt.
In the top of the sixth, the Pirates got a pair of insurance
runs on a triple by Mitch Nelson that scored Luis Tovar and Mitch
Ramsay and then Nelson scored one more on a Logger error as the
Pirates collected the eventual 12-7 victory.
Spencer Crace (Wilsonville, Ore.) took the loss for the Loggers,
allowing nine runs, all unearned, on eight hits in one and
two-thirds innings pitched. Chad Flett collected the win for
Whitworth, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits with eight
strikeouts in the seven-inning complete game.
Resnik continued his hot-hitting at the plate, going
three-for-four with three RBIs on the game to lead the Logger
offense. Ramsay led the way for Whitworth, going four-for-four from
the plate with two runs scored and three RBIs.
The Loggers head to Walla Walla next weekend as they will take
on the Whitman Missionaries in a four-game NWC series.
