FOREST GROVE, Ore. - After rain postponed the opening games of
the Northwest Conference baseball series between the Puget Sound
Loggers and Pacific Boxers to Sunday, the Loggers fell twice to the
Boxers, 3-2 and 9-5, on Sunday afternoon and evening in Forest
Grove, Ore.
In the first game, the Loggers took the early lead when Rockey
(Mountlake Terrace, Wash./New Mexico) singled through the left
side to score Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School)
in the third inning and then Chaz Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver
Creek) hit a sacrifice fly to score David Thirlby (Seattle,
Wash./O'Dea). Pacific got on the board in the seventh inning
with a single run and then forced extra innings with a pinch hit
home run in the bottom of the ninth. After the Loggers were
held scoreless in the top of the 10th, Pacific forced in the
winning run on a hit-by-pitch with two outs to collect the 3-2 win.
Colby Robinson (Gig Harbor, Wash./Olympic College) took the
loss, allowing one unearned run on no-hits with a pair of
strikeouts in one inning pitched.
In the second game, the Boxers struck for four runs in the
bottom of the first to take the early lead. After one more
Pacific run in the second, the Loggers scored a pair in the top of
the fourth and then two more in the top of the fifth on a two RBI
double by Rockey that got the Loggers back within two runs,
6-4. Pacific increased their lead with one more run in the
sixth inning before Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) drove in
Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) on a sacrifice fly in the
top of the eighth. Two more runs in the bottom of the eighth
would give the Boxers the eventual 9-5 victory.
Taylor Volz (Portland, Ore./Grant) took the loss, allowing four
runs on six hits in just one-third inning pitched. Spencer
Crace (Wilsonville, Ore.) was solid in relief, allowing three runs
on five hits in four and two-third innings pitched.
