TACOMA, Wash. - On a sunny April day, the sun didn't quite shine
in the direction of the Puget Sound Loggers as they dropped a pair
of closely contested games to the George Fox Bruins in a Northwest
Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Logger
Field in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first game, the Loggers got on the board first when Will
Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) grounded out to second base to
score Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) and then Matt Cox
(Salem, Ore./South Salem) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to
score Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo) and give UPS a 2-0
lead. The Bruins got within one with a solo home run by Seth
Anderson in the top of the second but the Loggers answered back
with an RBI single down the right field line by Andrew Grady (Cave
Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) that scored Casey Coberly (Boise,
Idaho).
The Bruins tied it up in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI
single by Dan Winterstein and followed that up by a Seth Anderson
double that scored Winterstein from first for a 4-3 GFU lead.
The Loggers evened it up in the bottom of the sixth with and RBI
single from Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School)
to score David Thirlby (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea) but George Fox used
three runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead and
eventually the win, 7-4.
Mark Putney collected the win for George Fox, allowing four runs
on six hits in six innings pitched. Chad Jones collected the
save with one hit in one inning pitched while Colby Robinson (Gig
Harbor, Wash./Olympic College) took the loss for Puget Sound,
allowing three runs on one hit in one and one-third innings of
relief.
In the nightcap, the Bruins struck first when Kyle Kuenzi scored
on a passed ball in the top of the first but the Loggers responded
with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the early
lead. After one more Bruin run in the top of the inning, the
Loggers scored a trio of runs yet again in the bottom of the
second, two of them coming on a mammoth home run by junior Mark
Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./New Mexico).
Matt Wyckoff singled in Taylor Hunter in the top of fourth for
the third George Fox run but the Loggers continued to answer back,
scoring Doug Cox on an RBI single by Ringold in the bottom of the
fifth to stay up by four runs. The Bruins began to chip away
at the Logger lead again in the top of the sixth, using a two-run
home run by Wyckoff and an RBI double by Anderson to get within one
run, 7-6.
Kuenzi singled in the top of the seventh to tied the game up but
the Loggers forced Bo Thunell to hit into the double play to end
the inning and force extra frames. In the top of the eighth,
Todd Siler hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Cody Curtin
and that was enough for the Bruins to collect the 8-7 comeback win.
Travis Schroeder collected the win for George Fox allowing just
one run on two hits in six innings of relief. Robinson took
the loss for Puget Sound, allowing one run on two hits in one and
two-third innings pitched.
The Loggers will be back on the diamond on Wednesday afternoon
when they play host to British Columbia in the final home game of
2009. The Loggers will then travel to Parkland next weekend
for a four-game series with Pacific Lutheran.
