PARKLAND, Wash. - Playing for a Northwest Conference title, the
Pacific Lutheran Lutes took a pair from the Puget Sound Loggers in
a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon
at PLU Baseball Field in Parkland, Wash.
In the first game, the Lutes got off to the early lead with
three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Puget Sound
answered back in the top of the second, beginning with a RBI single
by Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day).
Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) then earned a bases-loaded
walk to score David Thirlby (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea). The
Loggers took the lead when Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace,
Wash./New Mexico) reached on a fielding error that allowed two
Loggers to come around as UPS earned a 4-3 lead.
The Lutes evened the game up in the bottom of the second on an
RBI single by Josh Takayoshi and neither team would find a way
across the plate until the eighth inning. In the next-to-last
frame, Matt Akridge reached first on a hit by pitch and the Lutes
would used three straight singles to move Akridge around as PLU
collected the 5-4 win. Ryan Frost collected the win for PLU,
allowing four hits in four scoreless innings of relief with four
strikeouts. Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) earned
the loss, allowing one run on three hits in two-third of an inning
pitched.
In the second game, the Lutes again got off to a quick start
with three runs in the bottom of the second and PLU, battling for a
Northwest Conference title, scored another three in the bottom of
the fourth to take the 6-0 lead. In the top of the fifth,
Jason Powell (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) scored on a
PLU error but the Loggers struggled to get any more offense.
The Loggers and Lutes will conclude their NWC series on Sunday
afternoon, beginning at Noon in Parkland, Wash.
