PARKLAND, Wash. - The Puget Sound Loggers couldn't muster their
way past the 23rd-ranked Pacific Lutheran Lutes, falling 5-0 and
11-10 in a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday
afternoon at PLU baseball field in Parkland, Wash.
In the first game, the Lutes got on the board first in the third
when Ben Shively hit a sacrifice fly to score Geoff Gabler for a
1-0 PLU lead. In the fifth, Shively made it 5-0 with a grand
slam down the left field line and PLU would take the first game by
that score. Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Clover Park) took
the loss for UPS, allowing five runs on six hits in six innings
pitched.
In the second game, the Loggers got on the board first when
Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) was hit by a pitch with
bases loaded to force home Chaz Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver
Creek). Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day)
hit a sacrifice fly to score Doug Cox (Kailua,
Hawaii/Kalaheo). Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./New
Mexico) finished out the scoring in the inning with an RBI single
to score Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School).
The Lutes answered back in the bottom of the second, scoring
five runs to take the lead after two frames. Four more runs
in the bottom of the third put the Lutes up by six, 9-3 but the
Loggers would fight back. Jason Powell (Redwood City,
Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle
Prep) hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the fourth and Cox
followed that up with a RBI single to score Mentor as the Logger
got back within three.
PLU added a single run in the bottom of the fourth but Puget
Sound kept the Lutes sweating with three more runs in the top of
the fifth. A single run in the bottom of the sixth put
Pacific Lutheran back up by two heading into the final
inning. In the top of the seventh, Powell singled in Rockey
to get the Loggers back within one run with one out but the Lutes
forced the Loggers to ground into a game-ending double play to
complete the series sweep, 11-10.
Paul DiPietro collected the win for PLU, allowing just one hit
in one and one-third innings pitched. Colby Robinson took the loss
for Puget Sound, allowing six runs on five hits in one and
one-third innings pitched.
The Loggers will conclude the 2009 season next weekend when they
travel to Walla Walla, Wash. for a four-game NWC series with
Whitman.
