SALEM, Ore. - Their seventh straight Northwest Conference title
defense started with little problem as the second-ranked Puget
Sound Loggers blanked the Willamette Bearcats, 3-0, in a Northwest
Conference women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Sparks
Field in Salem, Ore.
The Loggers (4-0-0, 1-0-0 NWC) got on the scoreboard early when
sophomore Mikaela Freeman (Alameda, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) gained
control of a loose ball in the 19th minute and fired it in for
eight yards out for her second goal of the season. Senior
Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) doubled the Puget Sound lead in the
31st minute, chipping a ball over Willamette keeper Kelli Gano
after receiving a long pass from Jenny Moore (Kent,
Wash./Kentwood).
In the second half, Moore closed out the scoring for the Loggers
in the 79th minute after taking a pass from Freeman before
finishing from 10 yards out. The win is the 17th straight
conference win for the Loggers and their fourth shutout in as many
attempts in 2009.
Senior Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) collected
the clean sheet, making four saves on six Willamette shots for the
shutout.
Puget Sound will look to improve to 2-0 in NWC play on Sunday
when they travel to Lewis & Clark to take on the Pioneers,
beginning at Noon at Griswold Stadium in Portland, Ore.
