Stags Slip Past Loggers, 14-6

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Held to just 163 yards of total offense, the Puget Sound Loggers came just short against the Claremont-M-S Stags, 14-6, in an NCAA Division III football game on Saturday afternoon at Zinda Field in Claremont, Calif.

The Stags (2-0) got on the board first when quarterback Scott Yingling got away from the Logger defense for a 24 yard run that gave Claremont-M-S a 7-0 lead after the extra point and 4:38 remaining in the first quarter.  Puget Sound (0-2) answered back in the second quarter when senior quarterback Kavin Williams (Ocean Shores, Wash./North Beach) connected with freshman Ross Zuhl (Issaquah, Wash.) for a 18-yard touchdown pass but the PAT attempt was blocked as CMS held on to a narrow lead, 7-6, with 9:36 left to play in the first half.

CMS running back D.J. Lillard gave the Stags a bit more cushion with 5:01 remaining in the second quarter, pounding the ball into the endzone from three yards out to cap a nine-play, 76 yard drive as the Stags took a 14-6 lead into halftime.  With temperatures climbing into the 90s in the second half, neither offense was able to get much done as the defenses held their own as CMS took the win, 14-6.

The Loggers were led on the ground by Casey Larson (Coupeville, Wash.), who collected 56 yards on 10 carries with a long of 16 yards.  Williams finished the game eight-for-22 passing for 63 yards and one touchdown.  Chad Koening (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) was his favorite receiver, catching three passes for 34 yards.  Defensively, Tyler Vlasak (Sumner, Wash.) recorded 14.0 tackles, including one tackle-for-loss.

Claremont was led by 135 yards on the ground from Lillard and 134 from Yingling.  Yingling also finished the game five-for-14 passing for 47 yards.  Defensively, Dan Picciotto collected 9.5 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack.

The Loggers head to Wisconsin next week for the first time in school history as Puget Sound will take on second-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.  Kickoff with the Warhawks is set for Noon CDT in Whitewater, Wis.
