TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound women's
soccer team jumped on the fast track to its ninth consecutive NWC
title on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Whitworth. The Loggers
(12-1-1, 9-1) won their seventh consecutive match and sit alone on
top of the NWC standings.
All three goals were scored in the first half of the match,
starting with a Logger goal in the 12th minute. Theresa Henle crossed a ball
into the box and Christine Isabella ran on
to tap it past the goalie for an early 1-0 Logger lead. Kelsey
Griswold responded for the Pirates (9-4-1, 7-2-1) with a goal in
the 28th minute. Griswold chipped in a ball from 30 yards out that
sailed just over the head of the goalie to tie the match at
1-1.
The game-winner came just before the end of the half in the 43rd
minute. Kylie
Beeson dribbled the ball to the end line and crossed the ball
through the box to the far post. Abby Goss came sliding to
push the ball into the net and regain the Loggers lead at 2-1.
The Loggers held the Pirates at bay in the second half, holding
them to two shots and none on goal. Jess Yarbrough made two saves
in the contest while her counterpart, Callie Bergstrom made three
saves.
With the win, the Loggers are now own the lead in the NWC with
six matches left in the season. The Loggers hit the road for a
three-match road trip next week, starting at Lewis & Clark at
noon on Saturday.
