McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Seniors Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu,
Hawai'i/Iolani) and Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Univ. of
New Mexico) each hit a pair of home runs but the Puget Sound
Loggers dropped a pair of games on Saturday at the Jim Doran Auto
Classic at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore. The Loggers fell
to Corban, 9-6, in the opener before falling to host Linfield, 6-3,
in the nightcap.
In the opener, neither team found a way to get a run across in the
first three frames but the Loggers were able to open up the scoring
in the top of the fourth when Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle
Prep) singled through the right side to score Nohara from second.
Corban answered back with two runs in the top of the fourth and
then exploded for five runs in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.
Nohara led off the top of the sixth with a home run to pull the
Loggers within five runs but Corban again answered with a pair to
pull ahead, 9-2. The Loggers bats came alive again in the eighth
inning when Rockey homered to center and then Jason Powell (Redwood
City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) singled through the right side to
score Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem from third).
The Loggers added two more run in the top of the ninth on a
two-run home run by Nohara, his second of the game, that also
scored Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) as the Loggers got
within three but it was too little, too late as the maroon and
white took the 9-6 loss. Senior James Lane (Silverdale,
Wash./Central Kitsap) took the loss, allowing seven runs, five
earned, on eight hits in five innings with a pair of strikeouts and
a pair of walks.
In the nightcap, the Loggers found themselves in a bit of a
pitcher's dual as the two teams combined for just four hits
in the first three innings. Linfield broke open the scoring in the
top of the fourth with a solo home run by Rhett Fenton. The
Wildcats broke the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring four
runs on four hits with an error to pull ahead by five runs.
The Loggers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on a
two-run home run by Rockey that also scored Nohara as Puget Sound
tightened the gap to 5-2. Linfield used a home run in the top of
the seventh to put the score at 6-2 but the Logger answered in the
bottom of the frame as Casey Coberly (Boise, Idaho) scored from
second on a throwing error but the Loggers wouldn't touch
home plate the rest of the way as they fell to the 'Cats,
6-3.
Senior Tim Fogarty (Pacifica, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) took the
loss, allowing five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits in six
innings pitched. Nohara finished the day five-of-nine from the
plate with four runs scored and three RBIs.
The Loggers will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they
take on Pacific Lutheran at Noon and then Whitman at 3:00 p.m.
