PORTLAND, Ore. - Senior Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace,
Wash./Univ. of New Mexico) used a three-run home run in the top of
the first to set a new career home run mark as the Puget Sound
Loggers beat the Lewis & Clark Pioneers, 12-6, in a Northwest
Conference baseball game on Sunday in Portland, Ore.
After Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) singled to start
the game and Chaz Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver Creek) drew a walk,
Rockey stepped to the plate and hit his 24th career home run over
the wall in left-center to climb past Michael Olsen for the top
spot on the career home runs list as the Loggers took the 3-0 lead.
Senior Jason Powell (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) led
off the top of the second with a solo home run and then Kramer
singled down the left field line to score Stephen Kelsey (Seattle,
Wash./Ballard) as the Loggers built the lead up to 5-0. A
two-RBI double by Resnik in the top of the third to put the Loggers
up by seven.
Lewis & Clark finally got the bats going in the bottom of
the fifth as they put four runs on the board to cut the Logger lead
to 7-4. Puget Sound hit double-digits on the scoreboard in
the seventh as three runs put them up, 10-4. The Loggers got
anotherl run in the eighth on an RBI double by Matt Cox (Salem,
Ore./South Salem) that scored Rockey from third.
After two L&C runs in the bottom of the eighth, the Loggers
got their final run in the top of the ninth as Kelsey scooted home
following a Pioneer error as Puget Sound collected the 12-6 win.
Rockey finished the game two-of-three from the plate with two
runs scored and three RBIs, also drawing a pair of walks.
Resnik was three-for-six on the day with three RBIs and two
runs scored while Kramer picked up two RBIs on two-of-five from the
plate.
The Loggers return home this weekend for a three-game series
against Linfield. First pitch with the Wildcats is set for
Noon on Friday at Logger Field in Tacoma.
