NEWBERG, Ore. – After nearly knocking off perennial power
George Fox in the first game, the Puget Sound Loggers took care of
business in the second game, splitting a Northwest Conference
baseball doubleheader with the Bruins, 6-5 and 10-6, on Saturday
afternoon in Newberg, Ore.
The Bruins took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a
leadoff home run by Brent Trask. Trask hit another bomb in
the fourth, this time a two-run blast to start a four-run rally
that put GFU up 5-0 after four.
Puget Sound finally got on the board in the sixth, using a
sacrifice fly by Casey Coberly (Boise, Idaho) to score Matt Cox
(Salem, Ore./South Salem). The Loggers climbed within one run
in the top of the eighth after Jason Powell (Redwood City,
Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) singled to left center to score Coberly
and then Stephen Kelsey (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) hit a two-run home
run that closed the gap to one, 5-4.
George Fox took advantage of a pair of Puget Sound errors in the
bottom of the eight to put another run on the board. The
Loggers got back within one on a one-out sacrifice fly by Chaz
Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver Creek) that scored Dakota Resnik
(Bellevue, Wash./Newport) but Bruin closer Chad Jones got Will
Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) to fly out to center for his
school-record 11th career save and the 6-5 George Fox victory.
In the second game, the Loggers came out swinging and the Bruins
couldn't stop the maroon and white. Coberly singled to
center to score Cox to give the Loggers an initial 1-0 lead but the
Loggers weren't down. Kramer and Mentor both picked up
first inning RBIs as Puget Sound took the early 3-0 lead.
The Loggers made it 5-0 in the third when Andrew Grady (Cave
Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) doubled in Kelsey and
Coberly. The lead hit 7-0 in the fourth as Kramer walked with
the bases loaded to score Resnik and then Mentor singled through
the right side to score Cox.
The Bruin bats came out of hibernation in the bottom of the
fourth as George Fox managed to get three runs on the board to cut
the UPS lead to four runs, 7-3. In the top of the sixth,
Coberly continued a strong afternoon, hitting a solo home run to
center field to push the lead to 8-3. In the top of the
seventh, Resnik doubled through the left side to score Grady and
then Coberly hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Resnik.
George Fox added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to
get back within four runs but senior Colby Robinson (Gig Harbor,
Wash./Olympic College) came in for a one-two-three ninth inning as
the Loggers picked up the 10-6 win.
Coberly finished the afternoon with four runs scored and four
RBIs in the twinbill, including a perfect three-for-three in the
nightcap.
The Loggers and Bruins will wrap up the NWC series on Sunday
afternoon beginning at Noon in Newberg, Ore.
