NEWBERG, Ore. - Scoring four runs in the final two frames, the
George Fox Bruins came back to defeat the Puget Sound Loggers, 5-4,
to win the rubber game of the Northwest Conference baseball series
in Newberg, Ore.
The Loggers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third
after Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) doubled to left center to
score Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) and then
Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Univ. of New Mexico) followed
that up with an RBI ground out to score Dakota Resnik (Bellevue,
Wash./Newport) from third.
The Bruins picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the third
to cut the gap to 2-1 but Puget Sound got the run back in the top
of the fifth as Stephen Kelsey (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) scored
following a sacrifice bunt by Grady that resulted in an error.
Puget Sound made it 4-1 in the seventh when Jason Powell
(Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) scored following an error.
The Bruins tied the game up in the bottom of the eighth and
then two Logger errors in the bottom of the ninth allowed George
Fox to score the winning run as they took the 5-4 win and the
series, two games to one.
Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) took the loss for the
Loggers, allowing one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout in
one-third of an inning pitched. Senior Jarvis Nohara
(Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) was solid on the hill for the Loggers in
the start, allowing four runs, just two earned, on seven hits in
seven and two-third innings pitched.
The Loggers will head down to Lacey for a non-conference game
with St. Martin's on Wednesday before returning to Tacoma for a
three-game conference series with cross-town rival and NWC leader
Pacific Lutheran on Saturday and Sunday.
