TACOMA, Wash. - A complete game shutout by Pacific Lutheran ace
Trey Watt gave the visiting Lutes a 6-0 win over the Puget Sound
Loggers in the first game of a Northwest Conference baseball
doubleheader but the Loggers bats pounded the sky for 11 runs in
the first three innings of the nightcap before heavy rains forced
the teams to halt the game on Saturday in Tacoma, Wash.
Watt shut down the Loggers in the opener but Logger starter Tim
Fogarty (Pacifica, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) threw a solid game
himself, allowing just one run on nine hits in six and two-third
innings. The Lutes exploited the Logger bullpen for five more
runs in the final two frames as 20th-ranked Lutes earned the 6-0
win.
Watt improved to 8-0 on the year as he scattered five hits over
nine innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. Puget Sound
left fielder Casey Coberly (Boise, Idaho) had the best luck against
Watt, going two-for-four on the game.
In the second game, it was the exact opposite as a three-run
home run by senior Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Univ. of
New Mexico) put the Loggers up early. PLU added two runs in
the top of the third to close the gap to one run but the Logger
bats exploded in the bottom of the frame. After three runs
chased PLU starter Robert Bleecker after just two and two-third
innings, Max Beatty came in to try to stop the Loggers.
Unfortunately for Beatty and the Lutes, the Logger bats just got
hotter, going for four runs on five hits without an out before the
skies opened up and forced the teams into their dugouts with the
Loggers up 11-8 with two outs in the bottom of the third.
The Loggers and Lutes will wrap up game number two beginning at
Noon on Sunday with their regularly scheduled game to follow after
the completed contest.
