TACOMA, Wash. - After finishing up a 12-5 win that was halted
due to rain on Saturday, the Puget Sound Loggers weren't so lucky
in the second game, dropping the final game of the three-game
series to the 20th-ranked Pacific Lutheran Lutes, 11-4, in a
Northwest Conference baseball on Sunday at Logger Field in
Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers began the day already leading 11-2 as the two squads
finished up a rain-delayed game from Saturday. Freshman Matt
Robinson (Lafayette, Calif./Campolindo) returned to the game after
getting the original start and continued a strong effort, leading
after seven innings having allowing five runs on eight hits with
four strike outs. Senior James Lane (Silverdale, Wash./Avila
Univ.) finished out the game for the Loggers, pitch two innings of
no-hit ball as the Loggers collected the 12-5 win.
Senior all-american Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Univ.
of New Mexico) finished the game three-for-three from the plate
with four RBIs and two runs scored. PLU's Ryan Frost was
solid in relief, allowing just one runs on two hits in five and
one-third innings pitched.
In the second game, the Loggers struck first as Rockey doubled
to right center to score Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) from
second as Puget Sound held the early 1-0 lead. The Lutes took
the lead in the top of the second with three runs, including two on
a single by Ethan Ottemiller that plated Corey Moore and Ryan
Aratani.
PLU added one more in the third and then pulled away with four
in the fourth as the Lutes held the 8-1 lead just four innings in.
After the Lutes added another run in the fifth, the Loggers
got on the board again in the bottom of the frame as Dakota Resnik
(Bellevue, Wash./Newport) singled through the right side to score
Jason Powell (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep).
The Lutes finished up their scoring with two runs in the seventh
on a home run by Ben Shively but the Loggers drew the final blood,
using a sacrifice fly by Powell and a single by Andrew Grady (Cave
Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) to put two up in the ninth as the
Loggers fell, 11-4.
Scott Wall earned the complete game victory for the Lutes to
improve to 5-1 on the year while Logger senior Jarvis Nohara
(Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) took his first loss of the year to fall
to 3-1.
The Loggers will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon when
they play host to Saint Martin's in a non-conference contest.
Puget Sound will then head down to Forest Grove, Ore. this
weekend for a three-game NWC series, followed by a single
non-conference game on Sunday.
