FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Totaling 12 extra base hits,
including four triples, the Puget Sound Loggers swept past the
Pacific Boxers with identical 13-5 wins in both ends of a Northwest
Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Forest
Grove, Ore.
The Loggers took the lead in the first inning as Doug Cox
(Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo) doubled to center to score Casey Coberly
(Boise, Idaho) and Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Univ. of
New Mexico). Rockey made it 3-0 for the Loggers in the top of
the second, doubling down the right field line to score Matt Cox
(Salem, Ore./South Salem) from third.
The Boxers tied it up in the bottom of the second with a trio of
runs and then took the lead with a lone run in the third.
Puget Sound battled back, retaking the lead in the fifth after Will
Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) singled up the middle to score
Rockey and Coberly.
The Loggers expanded the lead in the sixth, using three runs on
four hits to push the lead to 8-4. After a lone Boxer run in the
sixth made it 8-5, the Loggers used a two-RBI triple by Coberly to
score Rockey and Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) and make
it 10-5. A two-RBI double by Rockey and an RBI single by
Coberly in the top of the ninth put the Loggers up 13-5 as they
earned the conference win.
James Lane (Silverdale, Wash./Avila Univ.) got the win, allowing
just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in four and
two-third innings pitched. Tyler Fransen took the loss for
Pacific, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in five and two-third
innings pitched
Coberly finished the game four-of-five from the plate with two
runs scored and four RBIs. Rockey was three-for-four batting,
with three runs, three RBIs and two walks.
In the second game, the Loggers waited until the third inning to
get it going offensively but a RBI single by Andrew Grady (Cave
Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) and a RBI double by Dakota Resnik
(Bellevue, Wash./Newport) gave the Loggers a 2-0 lead.
Pacific added a lone run in the bottom of the frame to pull back
within one run at 2-1.
In the fifth inning, Resnik hit a three-RBI triple to right
center and then scored on a wild pitch to give UPS the 6-1
lead. In the sixth inning, Grady and Resnik had back-to-back
RBIs as Puget Sound climbed up to an 8-1 lead.
Rockey added another run for the Logger in the seventh, courtesy
of a solo home run to left center to tie Michael Olsen's
season record of 14 dingers. The Boxers finally got their
bats going in the bottom of the inning, putting five runs on the
board. The UPS offensive barrage continued in the eighth as
Matt Cox doubled down the right field line to score Grady and Chaz
Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver Creek) and then Rockey hit a
sacrifice fly to center to score Resnik as the maroon and white
took the 12-5 lead.
One more sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth put the Loggers
up 13-5 and Colby Robinson (Gig Harbor, Wash./Olympic College) came
in to pitch the ninth, getting three straight hits as the Loggers
earned the 13-5 win.
Freshman Matt Robinson (Lafayette, Calif./Campolindo) went six
and two-third innings to collect the win and improve his season
record of 7-2 on the year. Ryne Miyamoto took the loss for
Pacific, allowing eight runs on six hits in five and one-third
innings pitched.
Resnik finished the nightcap three-of-five from the plate with
two runs and five RBIs. Grady was a perfect three-for-three
from the plate with three runs and three RBIs on the game.
The Loggers and Boxers will face off for another pair on Sunday
afternoon. The first game will count against the NWC
standings while the last game will be a non-conference tilt.
