FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The afternoon belonged to seniors as Jarvis
Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) pitched a gem to clinch a
Northwest Conference baseball series sweep while Mark Rockey
(Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Univ. of New Mexico) set a new
single-season record for home runs in a season in a non-conference
loss as the Puget Sound Loggers split a doubleheader with the
Pacific Boxers on Sunday in Forest Grove, Ore.
In the first game, which was the third game in a three-game NWC
series, the Boxers got on the board first with a lone run in the
bottom of the third inning. The Loggers took the lead in the
top of the sixth as Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) singled to
center field to score Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Calif./Phoenix
Country Day) and Stephen Kelsey (Seattle, Wash./Ballard).
The Loggers extended the lead in the top of the seventh as
Kelsey doubled down the left field line to score Will Mentor
(Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) and then Cox was hit by a pitch with
the bases loaded to score Kelsey from third. The Boxers
scored lone runs in the bottom of the eighth and bottom of the
ninth but Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) got the third out
with a runner on third to collect the save.
Nohara collected the win to improve to 4-1 on the season,
allowing two runs on seven hits in seven and two-third innings
pitched. Cox finished the game two-for-three from the plate
with three RBIs while Kelsey was two-for-four with two runs and one
RBI on the game.
In the nightcap, Pacific starter Jeramey Probert held the
Loggers to just one hit over the first six innings and was helped
out by two Boxer runs in the bottom of the fifth as neither team
managed much offense. The Loggers finally got on the board in
the seventh as Rockey homered to center field for his record 15th
home run of the season but Probert was able to work his way out of
the inning to collect the seven-inning complete game.
Taylor Volz (Portland, Ore./Grant) took the loss for the
Loggers, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning pitched.
The two teams combined for just nine hits on the game as they
teams wrapped up the two-day, four-game series.
The Loggers will wrap up the 2010 season next weekend as they
play host to Willamette in a three-game Northwest Conference
series, beginning at Noon on Saturday.
