TACOMA, Wash. - Playing the final game of the 2010 season for
both squads, the Willamette Bearcats pulled past the Puget Sound
Loggers, 8-6, in a Northwest Conference baseball game on Sunday
afternoon at Logger Field in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers took the lead in the first inning as senior Mark
Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Univ. of New Mexico) singled
through the left side to score Dakota Resnik (Bellevue,
Wash./Newport). Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo) drove two
more runs in a few batters later, as both Rockey and Matt Cox
(Salem, Ore./South Salem) scored following a Willamette error.
The Bearcats got within one run in the second as Max Stepan
doubled down the left field line to score two but the Loggers still
held the 3-2 advantage. Willamette tied it up in the top of
the fifth as T.C. Lee singled in Mitchell Rowan but a two-RBI home
run by Casey Coberly (Boise, Idaho) in the bottom of the inning put
the Loggers back on top, 5-3.
Willamette took the lead with four runs in the top of the sixth
and the Loggers struggled to find their way back into the game.
After a solo home run by Willamette's Derek Collins in the
eighth, the Loggers drew final blood as Cox scored on a Rockey
single but it wasn't enough as the Loggers fell, 8-6.
Parker Johnson earned the win for Willamette, allowing just one
runs on four hits in four and two-third innings pitched.
Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) took the loss for
Puget Sound, allowing five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts
in thee and one-third innings pitched. The Loggers staff had
the Bearcats swinging in the season finale, combining to strike out
12 batters in the losing effort.
Resnik, Cox and Rock all went two-for-four in the game, with Cox
adding three runs scored and Rockey added two RBIs. Sophomore
shortstop Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) also
went two-for-four for the Loggers.
The Loggers finish the season with a record of 19-21, tied for
fourth place in the Northwest Conference with a record of 12-12.
